Having that one element that diverts our attention from what we should be viewing—even when we know it's incorrect, we continue to engage with it. I wanted to evoke that emotion with this painting, so I added a simple orange dot next to myself, bright in color with two highly contrastive tones that accentuate one another. The viewer wants to look at the pensive figure, but the bright orange dot makes us wonder its purpose.
